The program, jointly conducted with Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology at IIT Bombay, was opened to students across India last year. After the award ceremony, Red Hat also announced the launch of a new Red Hat Scholarships program for 2005-2006.

The program has seen participation from across India, including Mumbai, Manipal, Coimbatore, Bangalore, Noida and Pune. Interesting projects like College Information System, Virtual Private Server, Mapping a lLip Movement to Meaning, A Front End for C Compiler were submitted for review.

Finally, thirty-three students bagged the prestigious Red Hat Scholarships Awards 2004-2005. The first prize was given to a team of students from Army Institute of Technology, Pune for their project, Virtual Private Server (VPS) 2.6.5-1.358.

The objective of initiating the Red Hat Scholarships is to reach out to Linux enthusiasts in colleges across India and encourage the adoption of the open source philosophy.

Javed Tapia, Director, Red Hat India said, "Red Hat Scholarships is a program aimed at encouraging talented young programmers in India. The largest number of engineers graduate out of India and, given the right guidance, the next Linus Torvalds can emerge out of our country."

At the event Red Hat also announced the Red Hat Scholarships program for the year 2005-2006. "We plan to make this an annual feature as part of our sustained quest to discover exciting programming talent. Our hope is that in the near future, software developed by Indians will take their place among world-class programs like Linux & Apache, and make India a proud contributor to the global open source community," said Mr. Tapia

Open Source is a worldwide movement that consists of people across the world collaborating over the Internet to develop software. The software thus developed is usually distributed under a liberal license that allows other users to see its code and modify it. The Indian President, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam has also endorsed Open Source software and held it up as an example of technology that can benefit India's one billion population.

Prof. D. B. Phatak, Dean of the Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology said that the open source movement is extremely relevant to India's future in the digital age. "Our objective with the Red Hat Scholarships program is to inculcate the open source philosophy into the minds of students. The evaluation standards used for deciding the winners are based on the quality of code, standards followed, and the documentation submitted. Looking at the rate of adoption of Open Source in India, there will be a great demand for Open Source Engineers. Encouraging young talent in this field is the need of the hour. While India does a lot of software development, there are very few programs that recognize programming talent. Programs like Red Hat Scholarships can help improve software quality and encourage young talent in India, making the country more competitive," said Dr. Phatak.

An eminent panel of thought leaders including Dr. D. B. Phatak founder of the Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology at IIT Bombay; Prof. S Sadagopan, director of the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore; Rajesh Jain, director of Netcore Solutions and others formed the Advisory Board for the Red Hat Scholarships.
